Who needs a visa to enter the UAE?

GCC citizens

If you are a citizen of a GCC country, you do not require a visa to visit the UAE. You need to produce your passport or government-issued ID card at the point of entry into the UAE.

GCC residents

GCC residents need to apply for visa online on the websites of General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs, Dubai and Ministry of Interior.

Other nationalities

If you are a citizen of one of the following countries (holding regular passports), you are exempted from UAE visa: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Finland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America and Vatican.

This list might change with change in diplomatic relations and foreign policies. It is therefore best to check with the UAE embassy or consulate in your country or the airline you would fly with, to the UAE.

If you do NOT fall into any of the above categories, you will require a visa prior to arrival in the UAE.

Who can apply for a visa?

The sponsor usually applies for a visa on your behalf.

Valid sponsors:

  • Hotels and tourist companies can apply on your behalf for a tourist visa (valid for 30 days), a service visa (valid for 14 days) or a visit visa (valid for 30 days and can be extended for other 30 days)
  • Airlines and airlines handlers can apply on behalf of their crew members for a 96-hour transit visa
  • Other organisations based in the UAE may only apply for visit visas and service visas
  • Individuals (relatives or friends) already resident in the UAE may, subject to guidelines, also apply on your behalf for a visit visa

Visa types, validity and fees

All visas are valid for 60 days before entering the country. (Visitors need to enter the UAE within 60 days from the date of issue of the visa.)

I am a British citizens travelling to UAE on holiday. Do I need a visa?

  • Citizens of the UK (with right of abode in the UK) will be granted a free of charge visit visa on arrival in the UAE. No application in advance of travel is necessary. Please note that your passport will be stamped for 30 days upon arrival. If further stay is required an application for an extension should be made to the local General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs three days prior to the expiry date (chargeable services).
    Please note that holders of British Overseas Citizens Passport who do not have the right of abode in the UK do need visas to enter the UAE.
    All visitors should have a valid return travel ticket and a passport valid for a minimum period of six months for tourism and employment.
    Resident visas and work permits are issued by the relevant authorities in the UAE after an application from a prospective employer.
  • I am not a British Citizen but I live in the UK. Do I need a UAE visa?
    • Maybe. In depends on your Nationality. Please see the Visa section on UAE Embassy’s website or check below.If your country of nationality appears on the list below, no advance visa arrangements are required to visit the UAE. Simply disembark your flight at Dubai International Airport and proceed to Immigration, where your passport will be stamped with a 30-day visit visa free of charge. This can be extended for an additional 30 days at an additional charge.

  • What is the minimum validity period that I need to have in my passport?
    • Six months, beyond the end of your intended stay. If you hold a residence permit, your passport must be valid for at least three months in order to travel in and out of the country.
  • Are there any restrictions on single women travelling to the UAE?
    • NO
  • Is it safe for a single woman to travel to the Dubai?
    • Yes. UAE is one of the safest countries in the world.
  • Is it legal to share a hotel room with my partner if I am not married?
    • No
  • Is kissing and holding hands appropriate in public?
    • As in all Muslim countries public displays of affection are considered disrespectful and may lead to a police caution or even arrest.
